Hi, I’m Ravit, a ceramic artist based in Toronto, and I work out of my home studio. For me, pottery is like solving a puzzle: what decoration is this piece asking for? I’m constantly surprised by what works and what doesn’t (though my cat seems to approve of all the “that didn’t work” bowls). My work is heavily inspired by surface treatments, drawing from mixed media techniques. I experiment with underglazes, slips, terra sigillata and washes, and I apply methods such as resist, carving, and textiles. Greenware is my favourite stage to work with, where the clay is most responsive to these treatments. If I could eliminate one step in the process, it would be glazing with clear.
